Motorola XOOM for AT&T gets through FCC

Apr

By Sovy

Here are some facts coming from FCC that point to an AT&T version of the Motorola XOOM tablet to come our way soon enough. The reason why it isn’t too far off is that the tablet has already won approval from FCC for compatibility with GSM 850 and 1900 bands, as well as WCDMA bands II and V (850 and 1900). Or to put it in simple terms, the tablet conforms to AT&T’s 3G band in the United States which if turns out to be the next iteration of the XOOM then will be the latest to join the Sprint’s WiMAX version of XOOM that seems pretty much confirmed as of now.

The FCC listing though mentions of a ‘wireless tablet‘ from Motorola that is referred to internally as IHDT56ME1. So if the wireless tablet that got the FCC certification is not another entirely new tablet that Motorola has developed in the meantime, it would be safe to assume the IHDT56ME1 is indeed the AT&T version of the XOOM that is expected to hit streets sometime soon.

There is no pricing or exact availability details that has come out in the open just yet.

A 16 GB Motorola XOOM in the works

Apr

By Sovy

The latest round of rumors xooming around Motorola XOOM is that there might be a scaled down version of the tablet to further enhance its appeal and spread its reach. Fortunately a scaled down version doesn’t mean one will have to compromise on vital characteristics such as its processor or RAM strength. Instead, Motorola might be planning on a XOOM version with less storage capacity in the form of a 16 GB memory that would make up the entry level XOOM. Also, the 16 GB version is expected to sport a lower price tag than the current least priced XOOM that cost anywhere between 9 and 9 with 32GB of on board. Surely a price tag of anywhere between 0 to 0 for the 16 GB version would pitch the XOOM slam bang in iPad territory and might even wean away many of those who otherwise would have bought the iPad 2. However, all of this is still very much in rumors territory all of which stemmed from an internal Verizon inventory system image that got leaked. Let’s just hope it materializes soon enough, more so since the XOOM is an excellent piece of hardware.

Now XOOM 3G price slashed at Carphone Warehouse

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has matched rival Dixon’s move of offering a £20 rebate off the price of the Wi-Fi XOOM with a similar price cut meted out to the 3G version of the Motorola tablet. So the 3G XOOM is now sporting a sticker price of £579.99, again down by £20. The price mentioned does not require agreeing to any contract though it would be cheaper if contract obligations comes into the picture. Like the 3G XOOM can be as cheap as just £199.99 though it one will have to agree to pay £25 every month that will allow for unlimited internet browsing. The charging dock will be offered free of cost.

Now the question is, will these price cuts be enough to ensure there are enough takers of what can be termed the world first tablet running Honeycomb, itself the first operating system designed for use in a tablet. Doubts arise on the back some reports that point out the XOOM has had a lukewarm response son far. Deutsche Bank is reporting sales offtake of about a hundred thousand XOOMs. The figure isn’t bad in its own tight but pales in comparison to the iPad or iPad 2 the sales figures of which has always been measured in millions. Deutsche Bank came up with the figure after reviewing the Android developer site to find out how many were using Honeycomb.

Deutsche Bank isn;t the only one painting a gloomy picture of the Motorola XOOM as Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette also claiming sales of the XOOM has been disappointing so far. James Faucette resorted to sales channel reports to state the XOOM’s dismal sales story though ins’t forthcoming with any hard core figures.

There isn’t any word from Motorola either endorsing or refuting the various claims about its poor sales so far which experts point out is due to Motorola hurrying with the product’s launch in spite of it being not fully complete as yet.

Motorola XOOM price xooms in at Dixons

Apr

06

By Sovy

The Wi-Fi only Motorola XOOM has been provided with a slight price adjustment so that buyers aspiring to own on of this will now have to fork out £479. Dixons, the electronics chain currently offering the XOOM in the UK had earlier announced the Honeycomb tablet would cost twenty more at £499. Sure the price difference isn’t anything to cry hoarse about but it sure is welcome.

Shipping schedule remains the same as the 9th of April which is on Saturday. Price for the corresponding 3G / 4G version of the XOOM will however remain the same at £599 which is the price that that Carphone Warehouse is selling the tablet for. Also, since the discount meted out to the Wi-Fi XOOM isn’t a considerable one, it would be futile to expect anything similar for the 3g / 4G version.

Cellular South to offer Motorola Xoom with MiFi bundle

Motorola XOOM buyers have just been provided with another option, courtesy wireless carrier Cellular South. The regional carrier is out to cash in on the XOOM craze with a Wi-Fi version that is inclusive of a free MiFi 2200 personal hotspot. What this means is that one will eventually be buying a Wi-Fi only XOOM but there is also a MiFi personal hotspot that forms part of Cellular South’s XOOM package and can be used to get online when not in the vicinity of a Wi-Fi network.

This will be in addition to the 3G and Wi-Fi only versions already available that cost 0 and 9 respectively. The XOOM PCs from Cellular South is also expected to be 9 though the carriers’s Mi-Fi plans start at for 32 GB of data.

Everything else with the XOOM remains largely the same. Like 32 GB of built in storage though Motorola is yet to bring to life the SD card slot. Then of course, there is the 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Android 3.0 Honeycomb as the OS as well as a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display. The XOOM will also be upgraded to be compatible with 4G networks though that would require the XOOM’s to be returned to Motorola for sometime, something that can be considered a pre-planned recall. A 5 megapixel and 2 megapixel camera at the rear and front of the PC respectively along with so much more does make the XOOM a worthy competitor to the iPad 2. Now we also have a data plan for the XOOM which reminds us of a similar Mi-Fi plan from Verizon that the carrier had launched for the original iPad. Looks like the competition is shaping up well.

Motorola Xoom WiFi to land in Canada this April

Mar

21

By Sovy

Motorola has announced the launch of its XOOM tablet PC in Canada where it would go on sale from this April onwards. However, things will be different with the XOOM tablet in that its the Wi-Fi only version that would beat its 3G counterpart in reaching markets while the latter would be on offer from the middle of this year. There are no price announcements as of now though its likely to be in the vicinity of what the tablet costs in the US. The XOOM Wi-Fi costs 9 in United States and is the first tablet to feature Android 3.0 codenamed Honeycomb.

“This product is going to cross over and will appeal to business clients as well as consumers; prosumers if you will,” said the national account manager for Motorola Mobility Canada Ltd, Mr. Glenn Kennedy.

The iPad 2, XOOM’s main competitor will be launched in Canada on the 25th of March.

Sprint soon to offer the XOOM

Mar

21

By Sovy

A picture of the Motorola XOOM with the Sprint logo splashed on it is perhaps indication enough of there being a version of the XOOM from Sprint coming our way. If that happens, Verizon’s exclusivity with the XOOM will also come to an end. Such a development was always in the rumor stages and now it seems to be probable. Everything else is likely to be the same though Sprint’s WiMax might come into the picture to ensure faster connectivity.

However, this is all that is known as of now and more details are awaited. What will be interesting to know is whether Sprint will follow Verison’s price model of 0 and 0 for the unsubsidized and unlocked versions of the XOOM respectively.

Motorola XOOM pre-orders currently being accepted at Amazon, Staples, Costco

Mar

18

By Sovy

Motorola has now officially announced the XOOM Wi-Fi tablet will be making it to the retail space March 27. B&H has already been taking pre-orders for the Wi-Fi only XOOM with deliveries slated to begin from March 27th. Now other retailers have also joined the scene with Amazon, Staples, and Costco currently accepting pre-orders for the tablet.

The price has been fixed at 9.99 for the Wi-Fi XOOM which will be available in the 32 GB storage option. Staples though will be shipping the tablet on March 25th, which will ensure you have the tablet in your hands on the launch day itself. For this, pre-orders will have to be placed before the 23rd of March. Amazon, on the other hand, isn’t mentioning any shipping date while Costco has said they will start shipping from April 1st. Costco is making that up with a slightly reduced price of 9.99 as well as a gel case which comes free.

So, if you have been holding off your purchase of the XOOM, you have plenty of options ahead of you.

WiFi only Motorola XOOM up for pre-order at B&H for $599

Mar

17

By Sovy

Good news for those who have been waiting for the Wi-Fi only version of the Motorola XOOM. The Android 3.0 tablet is currently available for pre-order in the United States at B&H. Of course there is reason to look forward to the XOOM tablet PC and the most obvious is the price advantage that the Wi-Fi only version has over its 3G counterpart. At 9, the Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM is a whole 0 less than the full blown 3G XOOM though both remains essentially the same feature wise.

However, there is no mention either from Motorola itself or B&H as to when the XOOM will eventually ship. There has also been news of Staples too coming in to offer the Wi-Fi XOOM where the shipping date has been mentioned as March 27. Also, B&H is likely to be getting only limited quantities of the XOOM, which means its only the early birds that will have their pre-orders honored. The good news though is that there are no shipping charges involved.
