PlayBook 10 inch tablet in the works

May

By Sovy

With the smaller 7 inch PlayBook tablet slowly settling down, more so with twin OS updates that RIM came out with in quick succession, the focus now is probably on a bigger 10 inch PlayBook that is rumored to be under development. So while there are reports of RIM having ramped up its production on the back of an increase in demand, there also come news, though from various unconfirmed sources about the bigger PlayBook making a market splash sometime during the holidays.

While this is yet to be accorded the official status from RIM, pure business sense does point out it would let RIM have better control over the tablet market with two products in two different size segments. Also, its would be probably safe to assume the next PlayBook will come loaded with all the necessary software enhancements such as an e-mail client to ensure better consumer penetration right from the start.

How Tablet PC’s impact our usage of other devices

tablet pc useage

Tablet Computers in the last two years have really matured and have proven to be a viable consumer item. You only need to look at the success of the iPad and the other brood the market has spawned. Companies like Samsung, Motorola, Asus, RIM and others have recently released tablets and people are quickly using their old devices less, and tablets more.

Nielson recently filed a very interesting report that gives us an introspective on how tablets are used in the USA. Around half of all tablet owners say they are the only ones that use the device in any given house. While 48% of all owners said they share the device with family members.

It also seems that tablet owners are using their other devices allot less. 35% of people said they use their PC’s way less since purchasing a tablet while 32% mentioned that they use their netbook or laptop less. The report allocates this to the extreme portability of tablets over their competition and the ease of use.

One of the most important elements of this survey was how 27% of all of the people polled said they use their dedicated e-reader less. I have a e-reader and love it, actually I have several. I used to read on them all of the time, but since I have tablets such as the iPad 2 I find myself using this device a ton more and my e-readers less. This is because a tablet is all in one device, I can read a few articles in a newspaper, check my email, visit a forum and do other things. Primarily I like the fact its full color and has better internal components such as Processor, RAM, and internal memory.

ASUS developing quad-core Tegra 3 powered tablet

We have already seen almost an explosion of Tegra 2 powered tablets with more waiting in the wings to explode on to the big scene but that seems to be passe. For here comes the even more powerful Tegra 3 processors that NVIDIA has revealed will be ready for release towards the fall of 2011. However, rumors now point out Asus might have already started putting together a tablet device with the Tegra 3 bit making up the tablet’s core. However, the earliest the Asus Tegra 3 tablet is likely to make the cut is around August of this year.

In the meantime, Asus will be having its hands full with a slew of launches planned within the next three months. Christened the Eee Pad Slider EP102 and the Eee Pad MeMo EP71, the tablets boasts of a 10 and 7 inch display. Also, while the former will be powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, its the Qualcomm CPU that will make up the core of the smaller MeMo EP71 tablet PC. Then there are Intel CPU based tablets also in the pipeline.

As for the Tegra 3 chips, the reason why it has the potential to rewrite the tablet story several times over are ample. Like it will have speeds of up to 1.5 GHz, five times the graphic file crunching capabilities of the Tegra 2 chip along with the ability to decode 1080p H.264 video on the fly. Tegra 3 will also have support for 3D stereo while also supporting screen resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. It goes without doubt, Tegra 3, which is slated to be first mobile quad-core System on a Chip will mark a significant jump in performance over the standard Tegra 2 chip.

No word as yet as to what the Tegra 3 powered tablet will cost like. The same goes for the other two 10 and 7 inch tablets as well.

Enspert to launch 8.9 inch Honeycomb tablet in July

Enspert has been in the news with an Android tablet earlier in the year though it was Android 2.2 Froyo that the Korean company was seen flaunting in its new tablet then. Cut short to almost the middle of the year and its once again in tablet limelight. However, fortunately, the company is now wise enough this time round to have on board Android Honeycomb on the latest tablet they have come up with.

So while the Identity Tab E201 sporting a 7 inch display and running Android 2.2 made for a credible alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Tab incidentally also running Android Froyo, the new Identity Tab E401 has grown in both scope, size and functionality to start a whole new chapter for the company in the hotly contested tablet segment. However, while details of the Identity Tab E401 isn’t flowing freely, what has come out in the open is pointing out to something that will a big leap from the E201. Like it will have both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity options, a T-DMB digital TV tuner (which is likely to be Korea specific feature), and a 1024 x 600 pixel display.

Also, the Identity Tab E401 will be one more in the growing class of 8.9 inch sized tablet while with Honeycomb in the scene, the tablet will surely have the power of dual core processor. The resolution though is a bit less than the 1280 x 800 pixel that most Honeycomb laced tablets till now boasts of. The Identity Tab E401 is expected to go on sale in July. Also, interestingly, its Samsung, Lg and now Enspert, all Korea based companies that have announced or have launched 8.9 inch sized tablet.

May

By Sovy

Best Buy was to start accepting pre-orders for the HTC Flyer tablet and the good thing is, the pre-order process has got off to a timely start. This includes the HTC page dedicated to the Flyer tablet PC going live though not before this last weekend. This when the pre-order process itself had started on the 25th of April. Also, as has already been mentioned here before, its only the Wi-Fi only version that is on offer for a price of 9. However, its still some time for the tablet to actually reach consumer’s end as the 7 inch Gingerbread tablet is not expected to start shipping before May 22.

More Amazon tablet rumors

Images

Digitimes, which has a checkered record in reporting rumors, is saying that Quanta Computer, the OEM that makes tablets for Sony and RIM, has received orders from Amazon for tablets that will incorporate both e-ink and Fringe Field Switching technology.

They expect the monthly orders to peak at about 700,000-800,000 units and shipping will start in the second half of 2011.

Let’s see what happens.

Thanks to Michael von Glahn for the heads up.
