Notion Ink Adam available again

Notion Ink has started accepting orders again for the Adam tablet PCs though its an ‘invitation only’ affair this time. The company has been sending out e-mail to a select group of individuals inviting them to place orders for the six versions of the Adam – three each of the LCD and the LCD + Pixel Qi version. A good thing here is that prices remain unchanged in that the lowest speced LCD Wi-Fi version of the Adam will cost 5.33 while the top of the line model with Pizel Qi Wi-Fi + 3G will set one back by 9.99.

So while everything else remains the same, it will be interesting to see if the response to the Adam is as overwhelming as it was during the first round of ordering. The first lot of Adam’s shipped out didn’t exactly come out with flying colors and reaction has been mixed. While, Adam’s that formed the first lot are still being shipped out, there has been several issues pertaining the tablet. Like one of the biggest disappointments has been the display which suffered from serious glare issues with the matt surface coating doing little to remedy the situation. Its performance out in the sun is way better than standard LCD displays but leaves something more to be desired.

Then there has also been a few issues with the touchscreen in that it fails to respond on many an occasion while software bugs too did not make things anything better. That said, Notion Ink has been quick in their damage control efforts and have made available a patch that did take care of a lot of software issues. Company sources have also informed they are on it and will come up with further upgrades soon to take care of all issues. In fact, they have also stated they have already started with the process of integrating Android 3.0 Honeycomb into Adam. This sure will put the Adam in a better stand to compete with many of the high profile Honeycomb laced tablets that going to be launched in the next few months.

An inherent good quality of the Adam is that the majority of its drawbacks are related to the software and hence, nearly all of them can be taken good care of. So those who have already purchased the device or are planning to do so can be rest assured of a quality product in the form of the Adam.

Notion Ink Adam Tablet vs Kindle & an LCD tablet in sunlight. Kindle for webOS.

NOTION INK'S ADAM, WITH PIXEL QI, VS KINDLE AND PANDIGITAL NOVEL IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT

The long awaited Adam Tablet by Notion Ink has a combo display of LCD switchable with an E-Paper display, with backlighting Off.

Good E-Reader Blog has a report and VIDEO and I've linked you to the larger YouTube one.

Here's an image-link to another, separate video, by Charbax, that also shows the e-paper display with backlight off.  When the backlight is On, the display is a sort of light blue-gray in the videos.  Nevertheless, both videos show reflections from the glass from the lighting above.

The first video gives you an idea of how the Adam looks in direct sunlight and how it compares with the e-ink and LCD displays.

They were disappointed to see that the dual layer of glass that it uses was "highly reflective in the sun, and even the matted screen protector is pretty useless."

' Our first comparison is with the Amazon Kindle and the Notion Ink Adam in Pixel QI mode.  We give you a great visual example of how the Adam ranks against one of the premier e-ink based electronic readers.  We have to give the advantage in this test to the Amazon Kindle.

The next comparison we show is how the Notion Ink Adam ranks with the Pandigital Novel 9 inch edition.   This test is mainly ... to show how Pixel QI in the Adam compares to the standard LCD based tablet and e-reader combination found in most competing devices.  We have to decide this contest in favor of the Adam, as the LCD was unreadable in direct sunlight. "TouchPad's beautiful, fully featured Kindle app supports the Kindle features users already know and love, and it's one of the first Kindle applications to support the latest Kindle features like Collections." notion ink adam

Welcome to another Good e-Reader Video! In this video we compare the Notion Ink Adam in Pixel QI mode vs the Amazon Kindle and the Pandigital Novel 9 inch. We show you how it looks in direct sunlight and how the Adam stacks up against e-ink and LCD.

One of the biggest factors in the Notion Ink Adams version of Pixel QI screen technology is how it employs the dual layer of glass that it uses. It makes the Adam highly reflective in the sun, and even the matted screen protector is pretty useless.

Our first comparison is with the Amazon Kindle and the Notion Ink Adam in Pixel QI mode. We give you a great visual example of how the Adam ranks against one of the premier e-ink based electronic readers. We have to give the advantage in this test to the Amazon Kindle.

Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan speaks out about the Adam Tablet

notion ink adam

Recently CEO of Notion Ink Rohan Shravan conducted an interview with Notion Ink Addicts on some important details regarding what Adam owners can expect from the official services that NI will be providing, as well as some future tidbits.

It looks like for content starved people looking for applications, books, movies and music will be launched around the middle of February. Otherwise he implores the users to download content from other websites. Although this may be a tall order for average users who do not know where to download applications other then the official Google Android Market. The Adam of course does not have access to the market yet, but if you ROOT your device, you can download to your hearts content.

The Adam does come with a rather lackluster music player, that also should be coming down the pipe with an update soon, the CEO reports. One of the benefits of the current Adam music player is that it automatically downloads cover art.

Rohan also mentioned on the official WordPress blog recently that the final orders for the first round of pre-orders will be shipped out in the next few days and emails are being sent to the people who have ordered them. The Reason of the delay was due to “one of our shipments for the touch screens got damaged while transportation which is going to effect a fraction of our customers. To make things worse, its New Year in China and every manufacturing plant is closed. But our touch-screen partners, Sinotek (also known as Sintek), will stay open for the Chinese New Year and re-manufacture all the remaining touch screens to deliver. I am making this special note, because we are really overwhelm at their response and want to thank all the employees at their firm who are going to miss their New Year celebrations and home visits.”

One burning question that has not been addresses and has met with some ire from a ton of customers, is the return policy. There is a current 7 day return policy with an Adam purchase, but many users are finding reaching the company is next to impossible and lots of emails are going unanswered. Hopefully this will be sorted out, if returning is not an option check out selling on eBay.

Be sure to check out our review on the Notion Ink Adam.

Notion ink Adam Tips and Tricks

notion ink adam

Many people who are early adapters of the Notion Ink Adam have been sending us emails, commenting on various forums and petitioning on our Youtube channel for many answers to common questions. We will endeavor in this article to explain some of the most common problems you will have and solutions to them.

Why is my Picture Quality not so good on the Adam Camera?

Many people who have purchased the Notion Ink Adam are wondering why their pictures they have taken with the device looks grainy and pixelated. This is due to the fact that the Adam camera has a very small plastic layer on the camera to protect it in shipping. When you dig your fingernail under the Adam, the picture quality will be greatly enhanced and you get better picture quality with the 3.1 MP camera it comes with.

Why does my Adam Crash or Programs not look right?

This is due to the fact of not loading in the update that Notion Ink provided its users to unbrick their device with the buggy over the air update that was issued, and then quickly pulled down. In the update that unbricks your unit contains new files for your device that will greatly enhance your overall experience with the Adam. It will not fix every issue we have reported on thus far, but will help. You can download the files and read the installation guide HERE.

I want to read eBooks! What do I do?

The production model of the Adam we have did not come with any eBook readers or any programs that are meant to read popular ebook formats. There are many Android applications available from many popular stores such as Amazon, Sony, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Borders and others. Recently we wrote an article on Google Android Market Alternatives, you can find direct downloads to all of those applications. Its as simple as copying the APK files you downloaded to your  USB drive or MicroSD card and then launching the files with the Sniffer File application that comes with your Adam.

If you want to load in your own eBooks there are a few Android Programs you might want to get if you find yourself downloading ebooks from various websites on the internet. If you are looking to read MOBI ebook formats you want to get FBREADER that will read those formats via MicroSD card. If EPUB formats are your thing you can download an application named Cool Reader and copy the ePub books to  your Micro SD Card. If you want to read PDF files and do not want to deal with the Quick Office version of PDF Reader which is proven to be a bit buggy you want to download Adobe PDF Reader.

If you have followed our tutorial on how to Root Your Notion Ink Adam you can instantly download any of these applications directly to your device, without having to manually load in APK files from the internet.

There is a black bar, blocking the top of the text on many apps

This is a very common problem where the top half of any field of text near the top of the screen will be cut off by the black Google Android Bar. This is the bar that contains your WIFI information, time and applications you might have downloaded. You might notice there is a blinking green light. You want to tap on this light and it will draw the bar into it and give you an acurate display of how much battery life is left.

Quick Office does not load properly!

It seems with the current version of Quick Office and the Adam is that it does not create new documents, spreadsheets or project files for you to go about instantly creating.

There are two things you need to do in order to get these applications working correctly. First of all, when you load the programs it gives you list of directories and files and say its scanning an MicroSD card. In effect it is not scanning those drives but the devices own internal memory.

To be able to start creating or editing a document you need to copy a document in .doc format and copy it to your portable USB drive or your MicroSD card. The Quick Office version of Word does not scan these two drives to open files. Instead you need to load the Sniffer application and navigate to these drives. If you click on a .doc file it will tell you that this format is associated with Quickoffice, when you click on the application the file is associated with it will open the document using the program. Your other option to open documents is to open the docs in the Adams own internal memory by hooking it up to your PC via Mini USB cable.

How to Root your Notion Ink Adam to get Google Android Market Access

notion ink adam rooted

If you have been an avid reader of the Good e-Reader Blog over the course of the last week, you know we have ravenously been testing out the Notion Ink Adam. During this time we have experienced some great hardware with the 10.1 inch screen and a dual core processor. Some of the software programs we had on the device were lacking and rumors of an impending firmware release to fix these problems is nowhere to be seen.

The fine gentlemen at Notion Ink Hacks have devised two different methods that fix a fair number of the software flaws the Adam had, and give you full Google Android Market Access! What does this mean for the early adapters of the Adam? Well how does Gmail, Flash, Angry Birds, Google Maps and every other official application sound?

The entire rooting process took a little over an hour, primarily due to the fact that we never done this before. The first thing we had to do was use the official Notion Ink De-Bricking files that were issued to people who received their Adam and downloaded the over the air update that fried their units.

This method was easy because all we had to do was connect the Adam to our computer via Micro USB to USB and install the bundled APX files that made our computer recognize the Adam as a device. Once we booted the Adam into recovery mode we were able to use the De-Bricking files to load it in.

Next we had to run the hacked version of the operating system which did not take that long as long as you followed the instructions, after doing a factory reset and deletion of our user files we rebooted our Adam. At first, we wondered why everything looked the same and then we realized that the Android Market appeared in the programs menu! Low and behold we are now loving the Adam more then ever before! The Eden GUI is maintained and we had to do some extra steps like make the system recognize the keyboard again, but after that we were downloading applications like a madman!

From some of our previous videos there were a fair number of bugs with some of the applications but after downloading proper ones that were bug free we are using our Adam more then ever before!

Although this procedure voids your warranty, if anything ever went amiss you can simply load the factory files back on it that came with the de-bricking files and that will put your Adam back to normal.

Instructions on how to Root your Notion Ink Adam

Things you need to root your Notion ink Adam; MicroUSB to USB cable and a MicroSD card to copy files to.

Step 1 – install the Unbricking files provided by Notion Ink

The first thing you need to do is install the files Notion Ink had released in order to fix any of the early Adams that downloaded the over the air update that bricked their unit. These files in reality bring your Adam back to a state of factory firmware defaults and add some general enhancements to your Adam.  These files will support both a PC and Linux Computer.

You want to download the file that is applicable to the Notion Ink Adam you purchased either the LCD or Pixel Qi version.

1. Windows PC, LCD Adam http://api.notionink.com/fix/windows/LCD.zip
2. Windows PC, Pixel Qi Adam http://api.notionink.com/fix/windows/PixelQi.zip
3. Linux PC, LCD Adam http://api.notionink.com/fix/linux/LCD.zip
4. Linux PC, Pixel Qi Adam http://api.notionink.com/fix/linux/PixelQi.zip

The first thing you want to do is unzip the files you have downloaded via WINZIP or similar program. The next thing you want to do is turn your Notion Ink Adam off and plug it into your computer via the Mini USB to USB cable. Then you have to turn the Adam back on by holding down the Volume – and power button at the same time. Holding it down for about 2 or 3 seconds is all you need. When this process is completed your computer will try and recognize the new hardware. Most likely it will fail and you need to find the drivers folder and make your computer associate the missing drivers with that directory. On a Windows Computer this is done by accessing the Control Panel and then Device Manager and associate the missing driver with the one in the Unzipped folder you did earlier. The specific name of the folder is called “usbpcdriver.”

After your computer installs the APX files and tells you it has successfully been installed you want to click on the “download.bat” file that is found in your recovery directory. Linux users want toopen a console window at the folder containing the extracted Recovery Kit, and run ./download.sh. Your device screen will show that
it is being updated, and the console window will show the progress.

Let this process run for a few minutes and you should be complete, once your done you can unplug your Adam from your computer and we’re now ready to get rooting.

Step 2 – Loading the Root Files on your Adam

The first thing you want to do with the proper rooting process is download the particular files to your computer. There are two files, one is for the LCD version of the Adam and the other for the Pixel QI.

LCD Rooting Kit: http://www.mediafire.com/?fousmcci7c7lbwr
Pixel Qi Rooting Kit: http://www.mediafire.com/?3s31pko2y2l3fsp

Once you download these files you want to copy their contents to your MicroSD card, the best card that works is either a FAT or FAT 32 so your Adam will recognize it. The two files are “Update.zip” and a directory called /recovery and a file called ‘command’  (there was a 3rd file in ours but it failed it unzip properly)

You want to then copy the Update.zip file to the root of your MicroSD and copy the directory with the file over as well, and now its time to get going!

The next step involved is to put the MicroSD into your Adam with device turned off. This time you want to hold the power + sign and turn your Adam on at the same time for around 5 seconds. If all goes according to plan your Adam should instantly update and then reboot. If it says it cannot find your files you want to scroll down to update.zip  with the option (external SD) in order to select it you have to hit the power button quickly.

After this process is done it should automatically reboot! The next thing you want to do is clear your cache. This is more or less done the same way by holding down ‘Volume +” and “Power” at the same time. This time select ‘Clear the Cache’ option and press the power button to select it. It will again boot your machine!

Here is the last step to full market enjoyment and reveling in eternal glory, you have to erase your user data. This is acomplished by just letting your Notion Ink Adam boot as normal. You want to go to your ‘Settings’ then ‘Privacy’ and Factory Data Reset.’ This final step should take a few minutes for it to do its thing and slowly reboot itself.

Once the system automatically reboots itself, it will put it to a state of factory default. So again you will have to configure your internet access and change all your settings to your preferred ones. The only essential thing you need to do is get the Adam to recognize your keyboard. So you can long press in any field that asks you to enter data and it will pop up what keyboard you want to use. We selected the regular Android Keyboard and you are good to go! After setting up your WI FI or 3G you want to hit the menu button and low and behold the Google Android Market!

Step 3 – Revel in Glory

Now that you have rooted your Notion Ink Adam you can now do a jig of joy and start to download, and install essential Google Apps, such as ; Adobe Flash, Adobe PDF Reader, Youtube, Gmail, and everything else you want. This is the FULL unrestricted Google Market Place that we have all really been waiting for.

Coming soon, a step by step video tutorial guiding you through the entire process.

Thanks to the guys at Notion Ink Hacks for method.
