Motorola XOOM software update now available, Flash 10.2 coming March 18

Here is some good and not so good news coming from Motorola. To start off with the good news, Motorola has come up with the first update for the XOOM tablet PC. To be available OTA, the update will ensure the XOOM is ready for Adobe Flash Player 10.2. However, this brings us to the not so good aspects of the news, since the Flash Player 10.2 won’t be ready for a release till March 18th.

The XOOM software update is currently available for download either via 3G or Wi-Fi though this in not applicable to those who have rooted their XOOMs or have unlocked the tablet’s bootloader. However, there are also some contrasting information which point out it isn’t necessary to unroot or re-lock the XOOMs to get the update though these are unconfirmed reports as of now. In the meantime, the XOOM update also brings along with it some improvements for the daylight saving time.

As for the Adobe update, it will now be possible to watch Flash video or playing Flash based games on all Honeycomb tablets. The update will be available from the Android Market and will form the working version of Android 2.2 and Android 2.3 but a beta version for Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It will be compatible with the Stage Video rendering pipeline for hardware accelerated H.264 playback and is also strongly integrated with the Android browser rendering engine. What this means is the Adobe software is now all the more capable of rendering HTML, images and GIF animation files so that scrolling is going to be smother than ever before while also promising a much improved level of integration between HTML files and Flash content.

What’s more, the latest Flash Player 10.2 will also include support for the on-screen keyboard. Or in other words, those Flash apps and content that have been developed for application on a desktop environment will also be equally relevant on a tablet as well.

It’s only been less then 24 hours that everyone was up at arms about the Motorola Xoom Price (9) and the fact it would not ship with Flash capabilities. At least one of these two factors should be squashed as Adobe has mentioned they will be providing Flash Player 10.2 for Google Honeycomb operating systems.

Adobe said in a recent blog post that the company is working with Motorola and other partners to give an optimized version within two weeks. If you are an early adapter of the Motorola Xoom Tablet you will get the over the air update to download it, when Flash is released.

Adobe also gave a bit of news on the availability of Flash this year; “we are aware of over 50 tablets that will ship in 2011 supporting a full web experience (including Flash support) and Xoom users will be among the first to enjoy this benefit.”
